Do You Want to be on the First Page of Google? Part I

Goggle LogoComing up on the first page of Google is often a new client request. Unfortunately or fortunately, you don’t just buy a placement in top Google searches except by using Google Adwords. (I can explain Google Adwords in a follow up article.)

Getting to the first page of Google is actually a process with unknowns and variables. You can make it fun by thinking of it as a game of strategy. You try this and see what happens. You try something else. Until you find a strategy that works. Even after you arrive, its not a given you will stay there. You have to keep checking that you are still on well placed on top Google searches and work to maintain your position.

The first thing I’d like everyone to understand is that no one can promise to place you on the first page of Google. Sometimes it seems like internet marketers are the snake oil salespeople of our times. The reputable ones will tell you upfront that there are no guarantees that their service will quickly and efficiently place you where you want to be on Google. On the contrary, the amount of effort and expense to reach the first page will vary depending on the competitiveness of the term and your starting point.

So moving along…how do you get to the first page of Google.

Start by deciding what search term you want to place first for, assessing your site and assessing how competitive that search term is.

Once you, or you in consultation with your internet consultant, make these decisions, you’ll select some strategies. Those would include but are not limited to:

-Google Places
-on-site SEO…placement of keywords in your text, page titles, metatags and Google description
-adding a blog…to again add more text and add more keywords to your site
-off-site SEO like setting up a YouTube page, link building, sending out press releases, and more

So tune in next week for more information about how to:

-pick the search terms you want to place for
-assess the robustness of your site
-assess the comparative competitiveness of a search term or compare your site to your competitors
