Two weeks ago I told readers that it can be an excellent marketing idea to launch your blog before your website. This week I’m here to tell you your Google Places page is another marketing tool to set up the minute you open your business…and before you even get a website.
If you spend a lot of time online, you most likely know what I’m talking about. If you don’t, you may not realize that one of the first places consumers might find your business is through Google Places or Google Maps. Some local searches bring up a map with businesses indexed on a map and listed in the main search results. Below you can see Google Places results for restaurants in Albany, CA.
To claim your listing go to Google Places. Many people have a Google Account. You already have one if you use gmail or Goggle Analytics, etc. so use the same login and password. If you don’t, you can create a free account right there in Google Places.
If you work from home, you don’t have to include your address in the public settings, but you must provide a mailing address to Google. Another detail that might be important to know is that only one business can be listed per address.
If you are in a highly competitive profession like dentistry, law, and acupuncture, you may need help getting your site to come up with the first listings. That’s when you’ll want to contact a web professional who know how to use keywords and Google Places.
